Noise Induced Hearing Loss: Statistics & A Solution

noise induced hearing lossDid you know when you are constantly exposed to noise you are at risk for significant hearing loss? This is called noise-induced hearing loss and is a serious problem…especially for people taking care of their own yards.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that any noise that rises over 85 dBA can cause permanent hearing loss that cannot be reversed.

The power tools in your garden in lawn? They all come just at or over the recommended amount. Here’s a list of just some of them:

  • Lawn Mower – 80-95 dBA
  • Leaf Blower – up to 115 dBA
  • Snow blower – 85-91 dBA
  • Hedge cutter – 95 dBA
  • Chain saw – up to 125 dBA

To protect your ears you have a couple of options. You can use ear plugs, but they are not as effective as ear muffs like the Peltor ear protectors. Most people don’t use ear plugs right and they don’t provide the necessary protection for your hearing. Earmuffs are a bit more expensive (not by much) but will offer you greater protection for a longer period of time.
