Best Rain Barrels

Rain Barrel Reviews

I wrote an article detailing the advantages of owning a rain barrel for gardening and irrigation purposes. I also wrote an article about what to consider if you want to build your own rain barrel or how to design your rain barrel system. However, for those that want to go the easy way and just buy something all ready to go, then this is for you.

Why Use A Rain Barrel?

Well, to rehash a little of what was talked about in the other articles, it is estimated your roof will dispel about 30,000 gallons of water a year in rain water. Wouldn’t it be nice to capture some of that for use in the dry months of the summer? It saves you money and it is eco-friendly because you are reusing a resource. Furthermore, they can be stored in strategic places around your home where watering is sometimes a chore. Also, in my article about the advantages of using them I talk about how to use them as a great compost tea fertilizer that is ready to go at the push of a button.

50 Gallon Rain Barrels

There are several choices in this volume level. You can get rather Spartan looking ones that are only there to serve a purpose, but you can also get some decorative ones that are prettier to look at. You can even plant flowers in them. The most popular one is the Algreen 81002 Agua 50-Gallon Rain Water Collection and Storage System. It is pretty to look at and comes with a hose to do watering with once you start collecting water. This may be a good one to invest in if you have a small need for water collection or if you are not ready to

65 Gallon Rain Barrels

The next level up is the 65 gallon rain barrels. Once you get into this range you get quite a few beautiful water barrels. The most popular model in this level is the Algreen 81001 Cascata 65-Gallon Rain Water Collection and Storage System. This is another decorative looking water barrel that I like. I like the ability to dress up something functional. You can get rain barrels that are totally practical with no looks at all. This one is not that way. It’s actually pretty good looking.

If you would like to increase the volume even more, then you may look at the 75 gallon water barrels. Once again there are several to choose from with the king being the Kyoto RBSS-75. I personally have a 75 gallon one that I enjoy. It’s a heavy dude, but we get quite a bit of rain here so I can fill it up pretty quickly.

Best Price for Rain Barrels.

If you are looking for the best price for water barrels then you will probably want to go with the Algreen 81002 because you get the most features and durability for the price. It is only 50 gallons, but it is a good entry point for people looking for the best price for water barrels.

Personally, however, if you have the money, I would recommend going for the 65 or 75 gallon variety. Algreen makes some really pretty models in the 65 gallon range. I like the Algreen 81001 because it matches most decor and you can add a planter to it. You can also buy sets to save money if you plan on buying multiple ones. I would definitely go that way if you plan on buying multiple ones because the savings can reach up to $100 in some cases.

I live in a rural area and have access to all types of plastic barrels from my farmer friends, as the buy a lot of their needs, herbicides, detergents etc in bulk barrels. However one I obtained thinking it was a detergent container had actually had a herbicide in it, so you can guess what happened to my plants after their first waterings!

This was one time I wished I’d bought new!
